As a Houstonian, have you ever wanted to hop on a bike and pedal through the city? Since Compucycle’s mission is to provide responsible recycling solutions for Houston businesses and individuals, we aspire to be environmentally responsible in all aspects of life, which is why we were so excited to hear that the City of Houston recently began giving its residents an additional form of citywide transportation to utilize. As one of several major cities nationwide to begin instituting the program, it appears that there are many people who just want to ride their bicycles!

The Houston Bikeways Program is an initiative that would allow Houstonians the option to access a three-speed bike for as little as $5 a day. According to the Houston Chronicle, the program will begin with 18 bicycles at three locations, with plans for adding 200 more bicycles at stations spread throughout the inner loop before the year’s end.
Mayor Annise Parker calls the program “a quick, easy alternative to being stuck in traffic or walking long distances in downtown” and also added that the bicycles would help Houstonians familiarize themselves with the Downtown Houston landscape. “The City of Houston offers over 300 miles of interconnected bikeway networks spanning across 500 square miles” according to the City of Houston website, and with shared lane designations, plans for additional trails and pedestrian-cyclist bridges to be built, it is clear that Houston is doing its part to go green.
